We went to Granbury last weekend to see Willie Nelson, but we ended up finding a lot more to do!
Granbury is an adorable Texas town with the Courthouse in the middle of a traditional town square. And it is barely an hour southwest of Fort Worth - so accessible!
We got to town mid-afternoon and enjoyed browsing all of the shops - we even bought a few Christmas gifts!
We checked in at our B&B before dinner. Our room was one of two
guestrooms (with separate entrance and private bath) at a house a few
blocks from the square.
A sweet little lady owned the house and the room was thoughtfully appointed. She even left homemade cookies and pumpkin bread for us! My kind of place. For dinner, we tried a place on Lake Granbury called Stumpy's.
We should have been suspicious because of the name, but we were expecting a casual sit-down restaurant with patio seating and seafood. Instead we got a counter-service taco/hamburger stand with picnic tables outside. We should have just gone somewhere else, but oh well! It wasn't bad, just not what we really wanted. At least the view was good. We spent the rest of the night with Willie Nelson at the Rio Brazos!
The next morning we decided to be adventurous and drive an hour further south to Dublin, Texas, home of the oldest Dr. Pepper bottling plant!
The best thing about Dublin Dr. Pepper is that it is made with real sugar instead of nasty high fructose corn syrup. I don't like regular Dr. Pepper, but I love Dublin Dr. Pepper!
We took a tour of the bottling plant and museum. Their machines are old - like mid 1900s - and they only bottle once a month. It was pretty interesting to see the process. Did you know regular Dr. Pepper is suing the Dublin bottling plant? Its
some sort of claim about Dublin DP marketing a different product that
violates the licensing agreements. We were happy to support the family-run bottling company - its really the only business in that town - and
I'm annoyed with regular DP for suing them!
Too bad we already have our Christmas card - I love this one of us (above, not below)!
We love small Texas towns so it was fun to go out of our way to see Dublin. Next, we made our way back to Fort Worth to visit the Kimbell Art Museum.
They have a special exhibit on Caravaggio, which was really well done. I always learn a lot at their exhibits. You should go be cultured if you live nearby!
To cap off our weekend, we got dinner at Joe T. Garcia's! The weather was perfect for enjoying their gorgeous patio! We split queso and fajitas and it totally hit the spot. I know Fort Worth has a several good Mexican restaurants and we want to branch out, but we love Joe T.'s too much!
After dinner my car wouldn't start and we had to jump it, which was not fun. Especially when a huge spider crawled out of my engine while we were trying to figure out how to hook up the jumper cables. Disgusting. I had to get a new battery on Monday morning, but it was worth it since we had such a fun weekend together. I highly recommend Granbury, the Rio Brazos, Dublin, the Kimbell and Joe T.'s if you're looking for a quick getaway from DFW!
